Under the Designs Act, 2000, a 'design' means only the features of shape, configuration, pattern, ornament, or composition of lines or colours applied to any article, whether in two-dimensional or three-dimensional form, or in both forms. These features must be applied to an article by any industrial process — and must appeal to and be judged solely by the eye. Importantly, design protection covers the visual appearance of a product — not how it works or functions (that is the domain of patents).

Design registration is available for a wide range of products including consumer electronics, packaging, footwear, textiles, furniture, medical devices, and much more.
The original and first proprietor of a novel and original design — whether an individual, company, or any other legal entity — can apply for design registration. Foreign applicants can also apply through an authorized agent in India.
